Somewhere along the way, many of us were told we weren’t creative. Maybe it was a teacher, a boss, or simply the culture we grew up in. Creativity was often dismissed as something extra—nice if you had it, but not essential.

I believe the opposite is true. Creativity is not a luxury. It’s energy. It fuels problem-solving, sparks innovation, and keeps us resilient when things get tough.

And here’s the secret: you don’t have to be an “artist” to access it. Creativity shows up in many forms—from painting and illustration to singing in the car, sketching doodles, taking photos of textures, or even noticing light and color on a walk.

These small, everyday acts of creativity generate energy. They shift us out of burnout and into flow. They open up space for fresh ideas. They create momentum.

Why Creativity Matters in Leadership

As a creative leader, I’ve seen firsthand how encouraging teams to explore creative outlets leads to stronger collaboration and better solutions. When people are given permission to be curious and experiment, they show up with more energy and confidence.

Design is part of this equation, but it’s bigger than design. It’s about cultivating a mindset of openness, play, and experimentation — because that’s where the breakthroughs happen.

My Own Return to Painting

Recently, I picked up painting again. Not to make perfect, photo-realistic images, but to simply layer colors, create blobs on paper, and follow where they lead. No pressure. No outcome in mind.

The shift has been remarkable. My energy is up. Ideas are flowing. I’m less tired, more inspired, and better equipped to lead creatively.

This is what creative energy does: it lifts us, it carries us, and it helps us see possibility where we once felt stuck.

A Call to Keep the Creative Energy Going

If you’ve been told you’re not creative, I invite you to challenge that belief. Creativity isn’t about talent—it’s about attention, practice, and permission.

Pick up a brush, hum a song, doodle in the margins, or capture something beautiful with your phone. It doesn’t matter what it looks or sounds like. What matters is the energy it creates.

Because when we keep our creative energy alive, we’re not just making art. We’re building resilience, fueling innovation, and shaping a brighter future.
